Research-and-Development Medical Center “MEDICAP”.
The RDMC Medicap was founded in 1997 with the purpose to develop perspective technologies in reconstructive medicine. The main trends of research of the RDMC Medicap are:
- Elaboration and introduction of new surgical technologies in esthetic reconstructive medicine.
- Elaboration and introduction of biocompatible hydrogels in soft tissue reconstruction.
- Research in prospects of stem cells application in reconstructive medicine. Cooperation in development of perspective surgical technologies in cellular and tissue transplantation.
- Creation of the transplants that are based on the hydrogel matrix and are able to restore function of organs and tissues.
Medicine, like any other science, cannot stay idle not moving ahead. Search for new materials to substitute human body tissues will necessarily bring to new discoveries. Without introduction of promising methods and techniques, medicine as a science is doomed to become out of date. Everything new usually breaks through with a lot of difficulties, but in the long run it will replace the old. Such is the dialectics of continuous development. After the polyacrylamide gel Interfall had appeared at the market in the early 90-s (it was invented and patented in Ukraine, the first world conference on its application was held in Kiev in November, 2000) it was followed by a lot of similar preparations (Formacryle, Bioformacryle, Cosmogel, Argiform – Russia, Amazyngel - China) which created a wild market offering their products. But all those gels were just imitation of the initial Interfall gel. Foreign companies started producing their gels according to the technology only partially disclosed by the Interfall inventors when they registered the gel abroad. Void of the specific know-how in technology the foreign gels came out much less perfect, which was proved by the performed at that time comparative examinations of those gels in reference to Interfall. After mass enthusiasm and distribution of those products in Russia, there appeared reports about complications (fragmentation, infection, fistulas, etc.). In the media, all possible complications caused by polyacrylamide gel injections were called as “polyacrylic mammary syndrome”, since the gels were mostly used for mammary glands augmentation. No signs about exact name of the material which caused those complications could be found in any report. There was no comparison of complications in reference to certain type of materials. And the opponents of the gels admitted that they did not have enough personal experience in gel application. But the followers of the gel Interfall were obtaining quite good results. Because they applied genuine Interfall received from Ukraine. According to our own scientific and practical experience we can claim with confidence that the Ukrainian gel Interfall has nothing in common with the complications occurred in Russia and described by Russian scientists. They could not prove scientifically their claims against Interfall.
For the purpose of objective evaluation, specialists of the RDMC Medicap have carried out a thorough analysis both of the positive experience and some of the concomitant problems related to physical and chemical properties of the gel Interfall. Conclusion is simple – gel is not absolutely perfect concerning some few features, but the low percentage of complications can not be the reason for its rejection. With the purpose of creating a new generation of hydrophilic gels, specialists of the RDMC Medicap, together with Department of Anesthesiology, Reanimatology and Surgery of the Post-Graduate Faculty at Lugansk State Medical University under the direction of DMS professor Yu.A. Khunov, have carried out a multiple-stage scientific research in the gel chemistry and technology. As a result of this research, the implant of a new generation was worked out, tested and approved. The Ukrainian “National Medical Technologies Center” Co.,Ltd. has launched production of the new gel at the Lugansk pharmaceutical plant “Pharmatsia”. The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has registered this gel and authorized its application in medical practice. Scientific research in its composition and collected clinical application data have allowed the company to claim that the new implant is a unique absorbable filler with unique properties. From 2007 the implant is produced under the trade mark Aqualift (registration N 5869/2006).
Along with introduction of this new product onto the market, after the first experimental pilot lots of the gel were produced, the Research-and-Development Medical Center “Medicap” of Lugansk started a new pre-clinical research in immune-isolation of the donor’s stem-cells for surgical transplantations. Currently all works are performed in cooperation with the Chinese “Jilin University Tong Yuan Biological Laboratory” at the premises of that laboratory. The obtained results have proved availability of practical application of the new technologies elaborated by the Medicap. The joined project of research in the prospects of stem cells application in reconstructive medicine is going to come out with a report about possibilities to restore functioning of the organs and tissues. Inauguration of the Stem-Cell Transplantation Center in “Jilin University Tong Yuan Biological Laboratory” (China) in April, 2006 opens the way to conduct clinical phase of the research in possibilities for stem-cell application in reconstructive medicine. Creation of implants based on the hydrogel, with the aim to restore functioning of the organs and tissues, is the priority of scientific and research work of the RDMC “Medicap”.
